Courses

Acute Medical Training offers the following courses -

Heartsaver CPR in Schools.

Teaches students the basics in CPR and how to react and deal with life-threatening emergencies. We show how to recognise the symptoms of heart attack, stroke and how to deal with sudden cardiac arrest. This course also teaches how to deal with choking in adult, child and infant and how to use an automated external defibrillator or AED. The duration of this course is approximately 4 hours and the successful student will receive certification.

AED

CPR for Family & Friends.

As the title suggests, this course is designed for the layperson. It is more likely that in the rural setting or small close-knit village or community, the person one would deal with would indeed be either a family member or a neighbour who is at risk from sudden cardiac death. Certainly one would be dealing with a person known to them. The course covers basic CPR and how to deal with sudden cardiac arrest and how to recognise the signs & symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. It also teaches you how to deal with choking in adults, children and infants and how to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The course is designed to be tailored to suit whatever age level you wish to deal with, for instance it can be just for adults, or infants and children, or for all ages. The automated external defibrillator (AED) is not covered in this course. The duration of the course is approximately 4 hours depending on what level you wish to do but unlike other courses this does not carry certification.

Heartsaver AED.

AED

This course is a requirement for anyone using a public access defibrillator. The course is similar to the others but is more closely linked to a professional standard. Because of the nature of this course, the use of barrier devices such as face shields and pocket masks are part of the course when dealing with mouth to mouth resuscitation. It also covers signs & symptoms of heart attack and stroke and how to relieve a foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) in adults, children and infants. There is a large emphasis on the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and it is covered in a more explanatory level when dealing with cardiac arrest. The duration of this course is 4 hours and the successful student will receive certification.

BLS for Healthcare Providers.

AED

This is a course for the professional. It is intended for both the in-hospital and out of hospital healthcare providers who respond to cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies . It is an essential course for healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, dentists, respiratory therapists, paramedics and EMT’s. It is also the course for the nursing/medical student. The course deals with both one and two person CPR skills from adult to child to infant and the use of barrier devices. It covers the use of bag valve masks (BVM’s) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). There is also an emphasis on scene safety. The duration of this course is 8 hours and a certificate is presented on successful completion.

IHF CFR Responder & IHF CFR Practitioner.

The IHF CFR Responder Course uses the standard IHF/AHA Heartsaver AED course as its basis and the IHF CFR practitioner course uses the BLS for Healthcare Provider course. Both IHF/AHA courses have additional modules added to cover PHECC course requisites. It teaches the student how to recognize and treat Stroke, Choking (FBOA), Heart Attack and Cardiac arrest, and how the four links in the Chain of Survival work. CPR and how to use an AED is also part of the course. This course covers adult, child and infant modules. The additional CFR modules cover the administration of Aspirin and explain the indications and contraindications of giving aspirin. Also covered in these modules are the Legal issues when treating a patient, recognising stress and how to seek help! Also covered is continuity of care, documentation and recognition of death. The course is both DVD and PowerPoint driven with a great deal of practical work involved. The duration of the combined course is approximately 6 hours. At the end of this course you will be given an Aspirin test sheet and a 20 multiple choice question (MCQ) test paper. The successful student will receive duel certification from the Irish Heart Foundation and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) both of which are valid for two years.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

AED

This course is for the experienced healthcare professionals who routinely either direct or perform resuscitation. The course is designed to enhance your skills in the treatment of arrest and peri-arrest patients through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases. Through simulations we try to reinforce important concepts such as identification and treatment of medical conditions that place the patient at risk of cardiac arrest. The course deals in depth with both the Basic Life Support (BLS) Primary survey and the ACLS Secondary Survey and the use of algorithms. It also deals with the importance of good chest compressions and the use of an AED. At the end of the course the candidate will participate in a Megacode testing station to validate their achievement of course objectives. A simulated cardiac arrest scenario will test the knowledge of core case material and skills. The candidate must also show their knowledge of algorithms and an understanding of arrhythmia interpretation. The candidate will also be tested on the use of appropriate basic ACLS drug therapy and on their performance as an effective team leader. The duration of this course is 2 days and a certificate is presented on successful completion.
